Security of Data in the Future of Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to greatly influence the field of education. Adaptive learning management systems and intelligent tutoring systems are just two of the technological advances in which computers use data to make decisions (Schiff, 2021). While the collection of this data enhances the effectiveness of AI in education, it has led to concerns about data privacy and security. With the increasing use of AI in the future of education, it is important to consider policy to protect personal and educational data. Vincent-Lancrin and van der Viles (2020) explain that important aspects for privacy policies for AI systems in education include transparency, explainability, and accountability. They recognize that protecting student privacy is of particular importance, as future educational and employment opportunities area affected by education. In regards to security, “AI systems should be robust, secure, and safe throughout their entire lifecycle so that, in conditions of normal use, foreseeable use or misuse, or other adverse conditions, they function appropriately and do not pose unreasonable safety risk” (Vincent-Lancrin & van der Viles, 2020, p. 13). Uchendu et al. (2021) reviewed relevant literature and found that in addition to creating clear policy for protecting data, other key factors were important to establishing a cyber security culture. These included leadership, change management, compliance, and commitment. Leaders in education must be proactive to provide students with data privacy and security protections in light of the certain expansion of AI in education in the future.
